Our Story

The seeds of what would become The Human Movement (THM) were planted in our founder's mind years before she ever knew what a nonprofit organization was.

Growing up in Cheverly, Maryland, Ngozika was exposed to numerous opportunities to enjoy nature and appreciate environmental stewardship. From her childhood years crisscrossing through tiny rivers and creeks scattered around the woods adjacent to her family home to the early mornings and late evenings spent walking under tree after lush tree or running barefoot through tall grass to catch glimpses of fireflies, Ngozika was surrounded by nature and constantly reminded of its importance in our everyday lives.

With that immense respect for our environment and our responsibility to preserve it, Ngozika began wondering about how she could help spread this same sentiment to her fellow Prince George's County residents. After working for an environmental advocacy nonprofit focused on protecting the rivers and streams throughout the Chesapeake Bay region, Ngozika realized there was an opportunity to better engage and educate her community members about the importance of environmental stewardship, as well as preparing our region for the impacts of climate change.

In the summer of 2020, THM was born and was driven by a mission to effect positive global change but with an initial focus on the DC, Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) area. To see how THM plans to shift to a global framework, check out our five-year plan.
